The Lyric Theatre was founded in 1888 as a concert hall. It was restored and enlarged on the exact location twice by architect Frank Matcham, first in 1890 and later in 1895. The theatre was scheduled to close and be demolished in 1966. It was reinstalled and reopened its doors in 1979.
Lyric became an entertainment hotspot amid locals shortly after opening. Its popularity continues even today. And with world-class facilities and incredible productions to attract audiences, seats sell out in no time.
The Lyric Theatre features two performance areas: the Principal House, a 550-seater auditorium that retains its original 19th-century design and holds main shows and the 120-seat Studio hosts secondary productions.
It also has two stages: a traditional Victorian Main House and a flexible contemporary Studio theatre. Due to the Reuben Foundation Wing, the theatre has also become equipped to handle digital media broadcasting, including film, musical, and digital art.
